You might have seen my Katya Katya Shehurina collection feature here on BRIDAL EDITOR (your new bridal best friend when it comes to planning your dress and accessories for the BIG DAY) – if not, click here – or you may have discovered Katya Katya Shehurina at The National Wedding Show and fallen in love there and then, regardless you’ll know that this is one hell of a special bridal brand, just perfect for the bohemian-meets-vintage bride-to-be…
I managed to catch up with the very talented designer behind the label, Katya Shehurina to find out a little more about everything from the design process to who she’d love to dress celebrity-wise…
#1 Tell us a little about the history of Katya Katya Shehurina? Where did the bridal label begin…
“I decided to launch my own business in 2007, focusing on evening wear but having always created a few one off pieces for bridal. Recognizing a gap in the market and a demand for a less traditional style of gown, I grew very quickly within bridal and found a love for the industry which is unprecedented.”
#2 Who is the Katya Katya Shehurina woman? Describe her to us…
“The Katya Katya Shehurina bride seeks elegance and romance from her French laced gown for her special day. Connected to nature through its rustic charm and bohemian feel, the Katya bride knows a timeless style and loves to let her personality shine through with a simple change of the slip. Whether that is white for the ceremony or powder blue for the reception.”
#3 What type of materials does the brand use, and where are they sourced from? What can brides-to-be always rely on Katya Katya Shehurina for?
“I only use the finest French lace and Italian silk taffeta within our gowns, which make them very light and comfortable. Every belt has handcrafted Swarovski crystals along with hand embellishments which add a special personal touch to our gowns.
Brides can rely on high quality materials and a variety of gowns to suit all sorts of shapes and sizes. But overall you can rely on our dresses to make you feel enchanting and elegant.”
#4 If Katya Katya Shehurina could have a particular celebrity or person to be the face of the bridal brand, who would it be? Who embodies the label in their style and personality?
“I would like to dress Kate Moss and Alexa Chung.”
#5 Tell us about the design process for a new bridal collection. Where does it begin? Where does the inspiration for a new line often emerge from?
“All collections usually start with pictures…it can be all different pictures that my eye stopped at. It’s very interesting how from one single picture the whole moodboard can grow and then the whole collection. The new collection started from a picture of a girl running through the field. We can only see her back, but we can almost feel the warm sun touching her skin and her happy laughter…”
#6 Are you inspired by trends?
“Trends show the movement of the time and that is always important to consider when designing a collection, as it will inevitably impact brides. However if you can stay one step ahead and break away from certain traditional norms then brides will gravitate to you for your unique approach to designing.”
#7 I love the bohemian vibe of the brand’s latest collection, not to mention the incredible lace detailing. What was the inspiration behind this particular line?
“A lot of my inspiration comes from what is around me, the elements, wilderness, wild flowers, the elements and the contrast of colours this all encompasses. This collection remains routed in the beauty of nature and the feeling of pure happiness and freedom which comes from this.”
#8 From your experience, when it comes to brides searching for THE ONE (in dress terms) where should they start? What should they be thinking about?
“Start with doing research and finding inspiration, you will be able to develop ideas from there – go to shows, read magazines, start a Pinterest board and you will start to see what your likes and dislikes are. However, remain open-minded about your approach to bridalwear as it is often the case that ‘The One’ can often be the one which did not cross your mind the first time.”
#9 Where would you like to see the label in 10 years time?
“In ten years time I would like KATYA KATYA SHEHURINA bridal to grow and to have a big flagship store in London so that we can present several lines for different budgets.”
#10 And finally, what would be your advice to brides-to-be starting the search for their wedding dress?
“Time, is usually something which slips away from brides. Give yourself enough time to find your dress as it can take up to 6 months to make a dress and so many brides do not realise.”
A HUGE thank you to Katya Shehurina for taking the time to answer my questions & The National Wedding Show for setting up this interview…
